Pillars

Elanco’s Healthy PurposeTM Pillars:

We recognize the impact healthy animals have on the health of people and the planet. They are all connected, and all contribute to the success and sustainability of our shared ecosystem today and for generations to follow. To achieve a future where everyone can live and thrive, Elanco focuses on these Healthy PurposeTM pillars:

Animals Icon

Healthier Animals

We’re committed to helping pets and food animals live healthy, quality lives by continuously identifying new and innovative animal care products and practices, while sharing our expertise.

By providing those who care for dogs and cats with innovative animal health solutions, Elanco helps pets live longer, high-quality lives by reducing disease-related health problems. Through our work with programs such as Pet Partners® we support therapy animal care and health.

As a business, we develop and provide innovations that address significant food animal health challenges, including Salmonella in poultry and some of the most damaging diseases and parasites in salmon production. We also actively work to share knowledge and make innovation accessible across the globe. For example, our partnership with organizations such as Heifer International® provides training, medicine and animal health care supplies to smallholder farmers, improving the health of their animals. Our policies help ensure our commitment.

People Icon

Healthier People

We’re committed to improving people’s health, lives and livelihoods by promoting animal companionship and enabling sustainable production of meat, milk, fish and eggs.

We love our pets, and they return the favor by contributing to our physical and psychological well-being. Working alongside the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Elanco is leading a four-year primary research study on the emotional and health benefits people receive from service dogs. Our work with organizations such as Pet Partners enables our employees to engage directly in work that brings awareness to the health benefits that companion animals provide to people.

Access to milk, meat, fish and eggs can make a profound impact on human health and prevent nutrition-related diseases. We help ensure that nutritious food is accessible and affordable to all through food security and hunger-related initiatives, including teaming up with Heifer International and collaborating with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation® for the East Africa Growth Accelerator Project. By 2020, we aim to help break the cycle of hunger for 100 communities around the world through efforts designed to address specific needs, while empowering community members to advance the effort.

Planet Icon

Healthier Planet

We’re committed to conserving natural resources by leveraging innovations and technological advances that will help our stakeholders produce more food, while making ourselves responsible stewards of our environment.

Healthy animals use their resources more efficiently, and, in turn, have less impact on the environment. At Elanco, we’re focused on helping food animals realize their full potential to meet the growing need for more nutritious meat, milk, fish and eggs while conserving our natural resources.

Conserving water and reducing waste, energy use and emissions are among our programs to support a healthier planet.

Enterprise Icon

Healthier Enterprise

We’re committed to managing our own environmental footprint and governing our business with the highest ethical standards while creating an environment where all employees feel safe, respected, empowered and invested in making a difference to society.

We’re committed to promoting diversity and inclusion and increasing women and minority representation in leadership. Our culture of safety improvement focuses on reducing serious workplace injuries. And we extend our standards through responsible management of our supply chain.

PurposeDrivenCulture

Our purpose-driven culture is evident in our employees’ frequent gift of time to causes we support. In the past four years, Elanco employees have volunteered more than 85,000 hours to cause-related projects and disaster relief efforts. We have worked together on more than 639 global volunteer projects, with employees giving their time to Heifer International work in the Americas, Central & Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Programs

Global Day of Purpose

Each year, Elanco employees volunteer in our communities through the Global Day of Purpose. Thousands of employees join local partners to support a wide variety of community initiatives, and raise funds to support our global signature non-profits. Whether caring for animals at local shelters, collecting food in our communities or sharing our technical and professional expertise, and knowledge, we take pride in giving back.

Elanco’s Healthy PurposeTM Programs:

Our Healthy PurposeTM programs focus on food security and the human-animal bond. Both focuses align with our foundational beliefs and our vision of Food and Companionship Enriching Life. Through our program, we engage employees, connect with the communities where we live and work, and help provide global, sustainable solutions.

We know that our vision is best realized in collaboration with others. This is why we work alongside select global non-profits to achieve a bigger purpose.

Pet Partners®

Pet Partners® is a global non-profit organization that provides animal-assisted therapy and education to clients including veterans with PTSD, seniors living with Alzheimer’s and those approaching end of life. Elanco works with Pet Partners® to build therapy animal programs internationally and supports the training of handlers. To date, Elanco has helped expand the registration of Pet Partner® trainers and teams in 11 countries and aided the training and certification of more than 11,000 handlers across nine therapy animal species. Responsible Use of Antibiotics

The concern about reduced effectiveness of antibiotics is real and must be addressed. Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally over time. All those involved - the human, animal and environmental health communities - must take responsibility and work together to develop long-term, responsible solutions.

Elanco is committed to bringing greater clarity and collaboration to issues around antibiotic stewardship. We are actively engaged in shaping science-based recommendations on responsible antibiotic use, animal welfare, and the long-term sustainability of the food system. As part of this commitment, Elanco:

  • Released an aggressive, multifaceted 8-point plan in 2015 to combat antibiotic resistance.
  • Hosted the One Health Antibiotic Stewardship Summit in 2016, convening more than 200 global animal protein industry leaders to address antibiotic resistance and stewardship.
  • Has worked with more than 10,000 producers, veterinarians and food chain partners globally to help improve responsible use of antibiotics.
  • Supports the use of antibiotic alternatives such as vaccines, enzymes and probiotics by sharing aggregated disease prevention and early detection information.
  • Ceased marketing of growth-promotion uses for shared-class antibiotics.
  • Opened a Vaccines Innovation Center to research alternatives to antibiotics in food animals.

This holistic approach - a One Health approach to antibiotic resistance - is echoed by the authors of the newest peer-reviewed articles in the special issue of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). Elanco supported the NYAS by bringing together veterinary, public health, biotech and economic experts to discuss and provide science-based solutions to the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance in food animal production. Results of the articles provide guidance in key areas regarding antibiotic stewardship. These include the development of appropriate antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance guidelines, allowing for the creation of more efficient solutions. Read each of the four papers, and a summarizing commentary, by visiting the NYAS site here.

Reporting

In 2019, Elanco released its new corporate social responsibility (CSR) platform, Elanco’s Healthy PurposeTM. This framework represents an evolution of the One Health commitment and supports our holistic CSR initiatives.

As part of Elanco’s Healthy Purpose, we are evaluating current activities, exploring potential new CSR goals and key performance indicators. We remain committed to promoting food security and the power of the human-animal bond through the planned launch of the Elanco Foundation later this year. The Elanco Foundation grants will focus on companionship, food security and community projects.

Elanco reported 2018 CSR key performance indicators as part of Lilly’s CSR report. We will issue our first independent CSR report in 2020.

Shared Value

We know that how we run our business has far more impact on society than our corporate philanthropy alone. That’s why we are investing in shared value initiatives, opening new markets while improving the lives of millions of people in a sustainable way.

Elanco launched its first shared value initiative, East Africa Growth Accelerator (EAGA), in 2017, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation®. Through this project, Elanco developed affordable, small-pack animal health products for small poultry and dairy farmers in East African countries, where livestock diseases remain a threat to food security.

Project teams register and distribute high-quality veterinary products and train smallholder farmers to better care for their animals through preventative care and proper medication administration.

Between now and 2050, more than half of the anticipated growth in global population is expected to occur in Africa (an estimated 1.3 billion people). The EAGA project allows us to enable farmers to become more productive and self-sufficient, which will reduce poverty, increase farmers’ income, and improve the diets and health of their families.
