We recognize the impact healthy animals have on the health of people and the planet. They are all connected, and all contribute to the success and sustainability of our shared ecosystem today and for generations to follow. To achieve a future where everyone can live and thrive, Elanco focuses on these Healthy PurposeTM pillars:
We’re committed to helping pets and food animals live healthy, quality lives by continuously identifying new and innovative animal care products and practices, while sharing our expertise.
By providing those who care for dogs and cats with innovative animal health solutions, Elanco helps pets live longer, high-quality lives by reducing disease-related health problems. Through our work with programs such as Pet Partners® we support therapy animal care and health.
As a business, we develop and provide innovations that address significant food animal health challenges, including Salmonella in poultry and some of the most damaging diseases and parasites in salmon production. We also actively work to share knowledge and make innovation accessible across the globe. For example, our partnership with organizations such as Heifer International® provides training, medicine and animal health care supplies to smallholder farmers, improving the health of their animals. Our policies help ensure our commitment.
We’re committed to improving people’s health, lives and livelihoods by promoting animal companionship and enabling sustainable production of meat, milk, fish and eggs.
We love our pets, and they return the favor by contributing to our physical and psychological well-being. Working alongside the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, Elanco is leading a four-year primary research study on the emotional and health benefits people receive from service dogs. Our work with organizations such as Pet Partners enables our employees to engage directly in work that brings awareness to the health benefits that companion animals provide to people.
Access to milk, meat, fish and eggs can make a profound impact on human health and prevent nutrition-related diseases. We help ensure that nutritious food is accessible and affordable to all through food security and hunger-related initiatives, including teaming up with Heifer International and collaborating with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation® for the East Africa Growth Accelerator Project. By 2020, we aim to help break the cycle of hunger for 100 communities around the world through efforts designed to address specific needs, while empowering community members to advance the effort.
We’re committed to conserving natural resources by leveraging innovations and technological advances that will help our stakeholders produce more food, while making ourselves responsible stewards of our environment.
Healthy animals use their resources more efficiently, and, in turn, have less impact on the environment. At Elanco, we’re focused on helping food animals realize their full potential to meet the growing need for more nutritious meat, milk, fish and eggs while conserving our natural resources.
Conserving water and reducing waste, energy use and emissions are among our programs to support a healthier planet.
We’re committed to managing our own environmental footprint and governing our business with the highest ethical standards while creating an environment where all employees feel safe, respected, empowered and invested in making a difference to society.
We’re committed to promoting diversity and inclusion and increasing women and minority representation in leadership. Our culture of safety improvement focuses on reducing serious workplace injuries. And we extend our standards through responsible management of our supply chain.
Our purpose-driven culture is evident in our employees’ frequent gift of time to causes we support. In the past four years, Elanco employees have volunteered more than 85,000 hours to cause-related projects and disaster relief efforts. We have worked together on more than 639 global volunteer projects, with employees giving their time to Heifer International work in the Americas, Central & Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Our company commitment also helped expand animal therapy work in 11 countries through Pet Partners.

Whether caring for animals at local shelters, collecting food in our communities or sharing our technical and professional expertise, and knowledge, we take pride in giving back.
Our Healthy PurposeTM programs focus on food security and the human-animal bond. Both focuses align with our foundational beliefs and our vision of Food and Companionship Enriching Life. Through our program, we engage employees, connect with the communities where we live and work, and help provide global, sustainable solutions.
We know that our vision is best realized in collaboration with others. This is why we work alongside select global non-profits to achieve a bigger purpose.

The concern about reduced effectiveness of antibiotics is real and must be addressed. Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally over time. All those involved - the human, animal and environmental health communities - must take responsibility and work together to develop long-term, responsible solutions.
Elanco is committed to bringing greater clarity and collaboration to issues around antibiotic stewardship. We are actively engaged in shaping science-based recommendations on responsible antibiotic use, animal welfare, and the long-term sustainability of the food system. As part of this commitment, Elanco:
This holistic approach - a One Health approach to antibiotic resistance - is echoed by the authors of the newest peer-reviewed articles in the special issue of the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (NYAS). Elanco supported the NYAS by bringing together veterinary, public health, biotech and economic experts to discuss and provide science-based solutions to the growing concern of antimicrobial resistance in food animal production.
Results of the articles provide guidance in key areas regarding antibiotic stewardship. These include the development of appropriate antibiotic and antimicrobial resistance guidelines, allowing for the creation of more efficient solutions. Read each of the four papers, and a summarizing commentary, by visiting the NYAS site here.

At Elanco, we believe that healthier animals can be a solution to some of our world’s greatest challenges such as food security and nutrition, human health and well-being, and environmental sustainability. Our CSR framework, Elanco’s Healthy Purpose, was established to embody that belief through programs that advance the well-being of animals, people and the planet while empowering our people to make a difference to society. We believe animals are the X-Factor the world has been looking for. They’re that missing piece of the puzzle - the game-changing variable that will unlock solutions to these seemingly disconnected issues of physical, mental and environmental health.
Our civilization is technically more advanced than ever before, yet we still face fundamental global challenges in physical, mental and environmental health.
From obesity and malnourishment to social isolation and depression, the pressures on human health continue to mount while we also see civilization use more of our natural resources quicker than ever before.
Nearly 40 percent of the global population over age 18 is overweight.1 Yet more than 10 percent suffer from malnourishment.2
We have more research than ever on what it takes to be healthy, but it’s never been more confusing.
Social isolation and depression are at an all-time high. Over the past two decades, the average size of an American’s social circle has declined by more than a third.3
We’re more connected than ever before, yet more isolated.
In 2018, we used resources 1.75 times faster than we could replenish them.4
We’re more aware of our environmental impact than ever before, but using our resources faster than ever.
At Elanco, we believe healthy animals are the X-Factor our world has been looking for – the unexpected, game-changing variable that unlocks solutions to the seemingly disconnected issues of physical, mental and environmental health.
Whether it’s the emotional connection we have with our dog, or the critical protein we get through milk, meat, fish and eggs, animals are central to our existence. From cats to cows, healthy animals are the key to solving some of our world’s most fundamental issues such as food security and nutrition, human health and well-being, and environmental sustainability.
With this knowledge, we have the opportunity to rediscover the power of healthy animals and their impact on some of the world’s biggest challenges.

We believe the solution is right in front of us – our pets. On this week's episode, Pet Partners President and CEO Annie Peters, shares how animals have the ability to improve human health and well-being, and bolster social connection.
We have so much, often conflicting, information about nutrition at our finger tips. It's no surprise that there is more confusion than ever about what it takes to be healthy. Studies show that our pets and service animals can increase connection between humans by improving mental, social and emotional functioning. In this episode, Kerri Rodriguez, a Ph.D. candidate at the Purdue University Center for Human-Animal Bond, discusses the health benefits of companion animals.
What does the coronavirus tell us about our global, connected society? And can plant-based diets really impact climate change? In the latest Xpert Edition podcast episode, Elanco's Chief Medical Officer Shabbir Simjee, Chief Animal Welfare Officer Michelle Calvo-Lorenzo and Chief Sustainability Officer Sara Place dive into recent headlines bringing animal health front and center of the conversation.
As people pay more attention to their environmental impact and aim to create a more sustainable world, it's important for them to know what's fact vs. fiction. Food animals are often cited as a major part of the environmental problem; however, healthy animals should be viewed as part of the solution. In this episode, Dr. Frank Mitloehner, a Professor and Air Quality Extension Specialist at the University of California-Davis explains common misconceptions about animals' impact on the environment and research to reduce methane emissions.
