A growing population needs a growing population of expert veterinarians. Bryce Winfrey, Sales Representative in the Companion Animal Health division based in Greenfield, US, reveals how Elanco is upskilling this new breed of caregivers. At Elanco, we strive to empower veterinarians, food producers and all those concerned with animal health by providing them with the practical tools to help animals live healthy lives.
Good animal health will only become more critical as our population grows and we need to improve the health of humans and the planet more sustainably.
While our teams of researchers and scientists at Elanco are constantly evolving treatments to improve care, we recognise that nurturing the next generation of animal caregivers is equally important.
Demand for veterinary services is already predicted to increase significantly. The US Bureau for Labor Statistics calculates that opportunities for veterinarians will climb 18 per cent by 2026, while roles for veterinary technicians will grow by 20 per cent.
As an industry, we have a responsibility to guide and support these new animal health professionals.
In 2016, we launched Elanco’s industry certification courses to prepare high school students (or indeed anyone looking for a career working with animals) with the knowledge they need and employers expect.
We launched two courses: the Elanco Fundamentals of Animal Science Certification, and the Elanco Veterinary Medical Applications Certification.
They assess students according to industry-valued and industry-recognised standards produced by Elanco. Students learn veterinary terminology, animal anatomy, welfare and behaviour, and they’re even sent out to work in the field –literally – to get hands-on experience. It means these young people are also exposed to clinical procedures and that essential vet-client relationship.
Not only do these courses help accelerate careers in this space, they fill an important skills gap for employers. It means they can identify and connect with skilled candidates who have a solid foundation in animal care.
We see these courses as another one of our tools to help safeguard animal health. Courses like these set students on a path towards hugely rewarding careers in animal health. Careers in which they have the opportunity to make a difference to animals, people and our shared environment to build a brighter future for everyone.
